Why did my entire house trip?

A whole-house trip is usually caused by a short circuit, an overloaded main circuit breaker, or a faulty appliance drawing too much current. It can also happen when too many high-powered devices (air conditioners, water heaters) run at the same time. If resetting the main breaker doesn't restore power — or it trips again immediately — call a licensed electrician. Do not attempt to force the breaker on.

What should I do when there's a power trip?

First, turn off or unplug all appliances. Then go to your distribution board (DB box) and look for any breaker that has flipped to the off position. Reset it by switching it fully off then back on. If it trips again, one of your appliances or a wiring fault is likely the cause. Plug appliances back in one at a time to identify the culprit. If you can't find the cause or the breaker keeps tripping, contact us.

What is the difference between a power trip and a power failure?

A power trip is caused by a fault inside your property — a circuit breaker has switched off to protect your wiring. A power failure (blackout) is when the supply from SP Group is interrupted, affecting your whole street or area. If your neighbours have power but you don't, it's likely a trip — check your DB box. If the whole area is dark, contact SP Group at 1800-778-8888.

Is it safe to reset my own circuit breaker?

Resetting a tripped breaker once is generally safe — switch it fully off then back on. However, if it trips repeatedly, do not keep forcing it on. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting your property from a real fault. Continuing to reset it can cause overheating or fire. Call a licensed electrician to diagnose the root cause.

Do you need to be EMA licensed to do electrical work in Singapore?

Yes. Under Singapore law, all electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker. It is an offence to carry out or engage someone to carry out electrical work without a valid EMA licence. CWC is operated by Jacky Chong, an EMA-licensed Electrical Technician (Licence No. 8/34636).

Does my business premises need an electrical installation licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if your non-domestic premises has a power load exceeding 45 kVA, or if your premises handles hazardous trades, an EMA electrical installation licence is required by law. You will need a Letter of Appointment (LOA) from the owner and a valid electricity account with a retailer. Licences must be renewed through your LEW no later than one month before expiry. As a licensed LEW, CWC can manage the full application, renewal, and certification process on your behalf.
